Joe Arpaio was the Maricopa County Sheriff from 1993 to 2017. During his tenure, he enacted the worst racial profiling against Latinos, ruled over the county jails with abuse, misused funds, which led to numerous lawsuits, cost taxpayers millions of dollars and eventually led him to be convicted of criminal contempt of court. This is a behind the bastardos episode, Carmentells Cristina about her biggest opp and a true terror to the Latine community in AZ, Joe Arpaio.

1
00:00:10.839 --> 00:00:14.439
Hi everyone. This is Carmen and Christina and this is

2
00:00:14.599 --> 00:00:17.559
Estodia's Unknown, the podcast where we talk about Latin American history.

3
00:00:17.600 --> 00:00:20.760
Sometimes it's horrible un deals with heavy topics like racism, corruption,

4
00:00:20.879 --> 00:00:23.519
and genocide. But more than that, it's that's about resistance,

5
00:00:23.559 --> 00:00:28.839
power and community. What is today's topic. Well, before we

6
00:00:28.920 --> 00:00:31.879
get into that, I have a question for you. Okay,

7
00:00:32.039 --> 00:00:37.159
do you feel like the most evil people live the longest. Yeah? Yeah,

8
00:00:37.280 --> 00:00:39.679
Like Ken Wey couls Endure was like fucking one hundred something,

9
00:00:39.799 --> 00:00:41.520
wasn't he ninety? I don't fucking know. Yeah, he was

10
00:00:41.600 --> 00:00:44.039
all as fuck. I know. The day he died was

11
00:00:44.039 --> 00:00:47.119
a celebration on Twitter when Twitter was not what it

12
00:00:47.159 --> 00:00:51.039
is now, the garbage that it is today. But yeah,

13
00:00:51.039 --> 00:00:52.799
that was one of my favorite days on the internet.

14
00:00:52.840 --> 00:00:58.039
The memes were amazing. Well, that also applies to today's topic.

15
00:00:58.759 --> 00:01:02.560
And today we are doing behind the Bastado, behind the

16
00:01:03.359 --> 00:01:08.359
it's been too long, Yeah yeah, so yeah, today's bastado

17
00:01:09.319 --> 00:01:13.400
is still kicking at ninety three years old. Ninety three?

18
00:01:13.799 --> 00:01:17.400
Who is this bastao? I'm talking about my biggest up.

19
00:01:17.439 --> 00:01:20.480
I'm talking about that bitch, that rackety ugly bitch, Joe

20
00:01:20.599 --> 00:01:25.560
or Pio. Yes, okay, I've been waiting for this. Yeah,

21
00:01:25.599 --> 00:01:27.159
and so I don't know. I guess before I get

22
00:01:27.159 --> 00:01:28.480
into it. What do you remember about Joe?

23
00:01:29.079 --> 00:01:35.159
He was the bitch behind some insane, that insane back

24
00:01:35.200 --> 00:01:40.280
then normal today law in Arizona that was super anti immigrant,

25
00:01:40.480 --> 00:01:41.920
and we all hated him.

26
00:01:41.879 --> 00:01:45.359
Like all the homies hate Joe or Pio. And I

27
00:01:45.439 --> 00:01:48.519
didn't know how to say his last name till right now. Yeah,

28
00:01:49.040 --> 00:01:51.799
yeah either. And I don't think he was behind that

29
00:01:52.000 --> 00:01:54.799
law that you're talking about. Oh he wasn't. Well, he

30
00:01:54.920 --> 00:01:59.280
was a sheriff. So ok starts staying to it since

31
00:01:59.319 --> 00:02:02.680
you don't really wait, okay, before before you do that,

32
00:02:03.239 --> 00:02:05.000
wasn't he stopping people?

33
00:02:05.000 --> 00:02:05.200
Then?

34
00:02:05.920 --> 00:02:09.759
Yes? Okay, yeah, okay, okay, sorry. Was this happening at

35
00:02:09.759 --> 00:02:12.280
the same time as HR for four through seven was

36
00:02:12.319 --> 00:02:15.960
introduced the sense to Brenner Bill, Okay, that's why I

37
00:02:15.960 --> 00:02:19.599
confused it two Okay, before I researched this, you know,

38
00:02:19.639 --> 00:02:21.919
I remember him. He was always on us, like a

39
00:02:21.919 --> 00:02:25.400
little attention whore that he was. No, he really was.

40
00:02:25.599 --> 00:02:29.599
He really was, even before the anti immigrant stance that

41
00:02:30.319 --> 00:02:32.919
we knew him for. Even before that, he was seeking

42
00:02:33.000 --> 00:02:36.639
media attention for of course different like shit he was doing.

43
00:02:37.879 --> 00:02:43.360
But I remember that he was detaining people immigrants and

44
00:02:43.360 --> 00:02:46.560
they were being held at the county jails back then.

45
00:02:46.599 --> 00:02:48.560
I don't think a put two together that this was

46
00:02:48.599 --> 00:02:51.479
a county jail, but it was like an outdoor gel.

47
00:02:51.479 --> 00:02:53.319
I don't know if you remember this. Oh my god,

48
00:02:53.400 --> 00:02:56.520
no I don't. I don't. Yeah, so we'll get into that.

49
00:02:56.599 --> 00:02:59.319
But I remember that. And then he would make the inmates.

50
00:03:00.120 --> 00:03:02.479
At first, I thought it was just immigrant detainees. That's

51
00:03:02.479 --> 00:03:04.439
what I used to think back in the day, where

52
00:03:04.560 --> 00:03:07.199
the men were pink as like a degradation thing. I

53
00:03:07.240 --> 00:03:09.879
don't even remember this. Wow, I don't remember any of this.

54
00:03:10.520 --> 00:03:12.960
Oh wow, Yeah, So he would force him to wear pink,

55
00:03:13.000 --> 00:03:14.800
and then he would do a lot of like interviews

56
00:03:14.800 --> 00:03:18.240
and whatnot. The thing that like for me is like,

57
00:03:18.479 --> 00:03:22.000
why did we all know about this man? He should have,

58
00:03:22.120 --> 00:03:25.000
like because he saw media attention and got media attention

59
00:03:25.560 --> 00:03:29.400
even before all of this, he was already known. He

60
00:03:29.479 --> 00:03:32.520
should have never been known outside of Arizona. No, no,

61
00:03:32.599 --> 00:03:36.680
but horrible people get attention, right right right? So yeah,

62
00:03:36.680 --> 00:03:38.479
and I knew he was a sheriff. I remember back

63
00:03:38.520 --> 00:03:40.240
in the day because for some reason we all knew

64
00:03:40.240 --> 00:03:42.919
about Arizona, and we should have. I had no business

65
00:03:42.919 --> 00:03:47.840
being in California knowing that Joe Orpio was the sheriff

66
00:03:47.960 --> 00:03:51.479
of Maricopa County in Arizona. I had no business knowing that.

67
00:03:51.520 --> 00:03:54.759
And I knew back then it was a Maricopa County. Yeah,

68
00:03:54.879 --> 00:03:59.000
didn't we? All? Right? Right? So yeah, let's get into it,

69
00:03:59.360 --> 00:04:03.439
all right, I'm ready. So Joe was born on June fourteenth,

70
00:04:03.599 --> 00:04:10.080
nineteen thirty two, in Springsfield, Massachusetts, to Italian immigrant parents.

71
00:04:11.400 --> 00:04:16.839
No way, and Joe emphasized that his parents came to

72
00:04:16.839 --> 00:04:22.360
the US legally through Ellis Island. Mind you, there was

73
00:04:22.399 --> 00:04:26.560
no legal It was like Willie nilly, white people come

74
00:04:26.600 --> 00:04:31.160
on over, you know what I mean? Yeah, isn't it's

75
00:04:31.199 --> 00:04:34.160
always the children of Italian ammigrants, isn't it? Because Greg

76
00:04:34.199 --> 00:04:41.879
Bovino is also famously a child of Italian immigrants. Yeah, Okay,

77
00:04:43.240 --> 00:04:46.279
his mom died during childbirth, so he was raised by

78
00:04:46.279 --> 00:04:50.480
his father, who ran an Italian grocery store. And here

79
00:04:51.160 --> 00:04:53.439
is where I will insert my little quip about Oh,

80
00:04:53.560 --> 00:04:56.920
so they ran an Italian grocery store, so they didn't

81
00:04:58.399 --> 00:05:04.680
as into the bland general white culture. Right, They kept

82
00:05:04.720 --> 00:05:09.439
their Italian culture by running an Italian grocery store. And

83
00:05:09.480 --> 00:05:12.560
I guess that was okay for them, right, rules for

84
00:05:12.879 --> 00:05:17.560
the not for me, as they also say, mm hmmm hm.

85
00:05:18.319 --> 00:05:20.600
So Joe helped his dad at the store while today

86
00:05:20.600 --> 00:05:23.000
in high school and then enlisted in the army at

87
00:05:23.000 --> 00:05:27.079
age eighteen while the Korean War was going on, but

88
00:05:27.160 --> 00:05:31.040
he didn't do any They never do what's it called

89
00:05:31.920 --> 00:05:35.160
anything special? Any combat? Yeah, combat, that's what I was

90
00:05:35.160 --> 00:05:37.160
speaking of. It's not that very special if he did.

91
00:05:37.199 --> 00:05:39.839
But and just pointing that out, No, but I feel

92
00:05:39.879 --> 00:05:44.079
like he would be a little more special maybe possibly

93
00:05:44.279 --> 00:05:48.920
say like I'm trying to think of someone John mckain's veterans, right,

94
00:05:52.240 --> 00:05:56.000
he was. He was a prisoner of war, Christina, John McCain,

95
00:05:56.120 --> 00:06:00.000
that's right, Yeah, yeah, thank you. Yeah. So in the army,

96
00:06:00.079 --> 00:06:02.639
me Joe served in the And there's something you have

97
00:06:02.680 --> 00:06:07.519
in common with him. A medical detachment division. Oh yeah,

98
00:06:07.519 --> 00:06:09.199
I know as a medic. I'm assuming it was a

99
00:06:09.240 --> 00:06:11.319
medic if he was on division in that division. No,

100
00:06:11.639 --> 00:06:15.480
there's other medical jobs. Okay, that's what I thought too,

101
00:06:15.560 --> 00:06:17.439
like there's other jobs. So it is I didn't really

102
00:06:17.480 --> 00:06:19.040
see what his job was, so I just thought that

103
00:06:19.079 --> 00:06:21.040
he was in that. You know what, he probably had

104
00:06:21.079 --> 00:06:23.480
another job. But he's a liar too, So because you

105
00:06:23.560 --> 00:06:27.199
mentioned that report writing skills and interviewing techniques were critical

106
00:06:27.199 --> 00:06:28.959
to his role, and I'm like, what were you doing?

107
00:06:29.720 --> 00:06:33.800
Oh my god, that sounds like the intake People like

108
00:06:34.319 --> 00:06:37.600
that would be into like a like a front desk person,

109
00:06:37.839 --> 00:06:41.240
like a medical assistant. No, no, like a friend desk person,

110
00:06:41.519 --> 00:06:45.399
a receptionist, yes, which no shade to that job. But

111
00:06:45.800 --> 00:06:48.040
for him to be like critical and who knows, I

112
00:06:48.040 --> 00:06:50.160
don't know his job was, you know, just we're just

113
00:06:51.240 --> 00:06:56.519
we're just yapping here. Yeah, we're just heavily speculating. And

114
00:06:56.600 --> 00:06:59.439
so then he also served as military police when he

115
00:06:59.560 --> 00:07:04.199
was stationed in France, of course. Yeah, And after his

116
00:07:04.319 --> 00:07:07.360
discharge in nineteen fifty four, he became a police officer

117
00:07:07.399 --> 00:07:10.199
in Washington, d C. Where he spent three years as

118
00:07:10.199 --> 00:07:13.360
a b cop. Then he briefly worked in the Sheriff's

119
00:07:13.360 --> 00:07:17.399
department in Clark County, Nevada, where he supposedly stopped Elvis

120
00:07:17.439 --> 00:07:19.839
for traffic citation. But he's a liar, so I'm sure

121
00:07:19.879 --> 00:07:22.680
that didn't happen. You can probably lie about that, yeah, probably.

122
00:07:23.319 --> 00:07:27.120
Then in nineteen fifty seven, Joe joined the predecessor to

123
00:07:27.240 --> 00:07:31.480
the DA, the US Bureau of Narcotics, and he remained

124
00:07:31.480 --> 00:07:33.959
there when it became a DA. He was there for

125
00:07:33.959 --> 00:07:37.759
a long time. He later explained that the Bureau was

126
00:07:37.800 --> 00:07:41.079
in need of Italian Americans willing to work undercover and

127
00:07:41.279 --> 00:07:45.439
arrest fellow Italians, arrest their own people. He was a

128
00:07:45.480 --> 00:07:52.480
professional snitch, and I'm sure other Italians hated his snitchazz.

129
00:07:54.920 --> 00:07:56.519
Of course, this was a job, right, of course he

130
00:07:56.560 --> 00:07:59.920
did that. No, of course, there's always room for snitches

131
00:08:00.839 --> 00:08:05.120
in for self hating this carceral culture. Yeah, yeah, in

132
00:08:05.120 --> 00:08:10.399
this carcoral country. Right. And he stayed with the DA

133
00:08:10.639 --> 00:08:14.639
for twenty five years, was stationed in Argantena, in Turkey

134
00:08:14.839 --> 00:08:19.279
and Mexicanina all over, and he eventually rose up the

135
00:08:19.360 --> 00:08:23.040
rinks to become the head of the DA's Arizona branch

136
00:08:23.160 --> 00:08:26.800
during his tenure there After he retired, he opened a

137
00:08:26.839 --> 00:08:31.759
travel agency in Phoenix with his wife Ava, where they

138
00:08:31.959 --> 00:08:35.919
sold somewhat described as a scami. But they sold me.

139
00:08:36.120 --> 00:08:40.600
I would he just he sold? Okay? They sold fifty

140
00:08:40.639 --> 00:08:44.000
two thousand dollars flights into space aboard the Phoenix E

141
00:08:44.360 --> 00:08:47.720
spaceship which was supposed to take off from either the

142
00:08:47.840 --> 00:08:50.919
Edwards Air Force Base or the Vandenberg Air Force Base

143
00:08:51.080 --> 00:08:58.720
on the five hundredth anniversary of Columbus's Voyage of Colonsation. Yeah,

144
00:08:58.720 --> 00:09:01.639
this sounds like a scam, I would agree with you. Yeah,

145
00:09:02.039 --> 00:09:06.360
the spaceship never took off. Of course, I guess this

146
00:09:06.480 --> 00:09:11.919
was part of the like a marketing scheme by the organization. Okay,

147
00:09:12.559 --> 00:09:14.679
so yeah, this was like a thing being put on

148
00:09:14.720 --> 00:09:18.440
by the Society Expeditions, which supposedly were the ones organizing

149
00:09:18.480 --> 00:09:22.240
this flight into space, and then they would like give

150
00:09:22.360 --> 00:09:25.200
these tickets to sell to traveling agencies. And that's how

151
00:09:25.320 --> 00:09:28.399
Joe and his wife ended up doing that. He says

152
00:09:28.399 --> 00:09:32.240
he sold like five flights, but a record show that

153
00:09:32.320 --> 00:09:37.919
wasn't true. Record show that was a lie. The lineman

154
00:09:38.039 --> 00:09:46.440
continues to lie right then, in nineteen ninety two, Joe

155
00:09:46.639 --> 00:09:52.480
ran for Maricopa County Sheriff, defeating the incumbent. Tom Agnos,

156
00:09:53.159 --> 00:09:57.159
was actually under fire for getting false confessions in a

157
00:09:57.399 --> 00:10:01.279
nineteen ninety one massacre of six Buddhist monks two months

158
00:10:01.279 --> 00:10:03.360
in training and an elderly none. So I'm not sure

159
00:10:03.360 --> 00:10:05.799
what was going on there, but I need to look

160
00:10:05.840 --> 00:10:09.840
into that. Oh my god. Okay, So, like Joe was

161
00:10:09.840 --> 00:10:14.000
the lesser of two evils in this case. Yeah wow,

162
00:10:14.120 --> 00:10:17.559
that's he had yet to do all his evil work, right,

163
00:10:17.759 --> 00:10:20.080
was waiting And this is what happens when you choose

164
00:10:20.080 --> 00:10:22.159
the lesser of two evils. They still do would you

165
00:10:22.159 --> 00:10:28.360
look at the shit? Oh so yeah. By nineteen eighty four,

166
00:10:28.559 --> 00:10:32.919
Joe started to attract the national attention for his policing methods,

167
00:10:33.799 --> 00:10:37.919
and this was when he enacted ten City. This sounds

168
00:10:37.919 --> 00:10:40.639
a little familiar. That's the outdoor dell that I was

169
00:10:40.639 --> 00:10:44.600
talking about earlier. Oh, that's tensity crazy now doing jail,

170
00:10:45.440 --> 00:10:50.559
and so he voluntarily described it as a concentration camp.

171
00:10:50.720 --> 00:10:53.039
Later later said he was just joking, like, oh, I

172
00:10:53.039 --> 00:10:59.600
didn't mean it like that. Yeah, oh sure, Joe, Okay, Joe, Okay,

173
00:11:00.679 --> 00:11:04.000
that's crazy because like right now they're like the right

174
00:11:04.000 --> 00:11:06.799
wing is like, don't call the Tension Center's concentration camps.

175
00:11:06.840 --> 00:11:10.279
And here is Joe, like it's a concentration camp. Yeah

176
00:11:10.440 --> 00:11:14.240
yeah in two thousand and what four no, bitch, nineteen

177
00:11:14.279 --> 00:11:16.000
ninety four. I don't know why I said believe it

178
00:11:17.279 --> 00:11:21.519
because that was way off. Sorry, I'm like my concepts

179
00:11:21.519 --> 00:11:24.759
of time in this episode is worse than other times. Yeah,

180
00:11:24.840 --> 00:11:26.720
just in general, we have a bad concept of time,

181
00:11:26.879 --> 00:11:32.840
space direction vision. I don't know I would survive, honestly, Yeah,

182
00:11:32.879 --> 00:11:37.720
without technology and context. No. No, So this tense city

183
00:11:37.960 --> 00:11:41.399
was supposed to function as a temporary extension of the

184
00:11:42.039 --> 00:11:45.039
Maricopa I keep want to say Mariposa, Yeah, because we

185
00:11:45.080 --> 00:11:48.679
have a Mariposa County here in California. Yeah, so I

186
00:11:48.679 --> 00:11:51.440
supposed to function as a temporary extension of the Maricopa

187
00:11:51.559 --> 00:11:54.480
County jail as a solution to overcrowding. Instead of just

188
00:11:54.519 --> 00:11:57.120
like letting some people go, oh yeah here refuses that.

189
00:11:57.200 --> 00:12:00.279
He's like, I'm not letting your prisoners and inmates go.

190
00:12:00.440 --> 00:12:03.320
Not these convicts. He had a joint, He had one

191
00:12:03.360 --> 00:12:06.799
single joint straight to jail, and so yeah, he refused

192
00:12:06.840 --> 00:12:09.799
to do that. So his solution was to have this

193
00:12:10.799 --> 00:12:13.919
ten city. It was located next to another county jael

194
00:12:13.960 --> 00:12:16.919
in Phoenix, and it was basically a big parking lot

195
00:12:16.960 --> 00:12:20.639
surrounded by wire fencing with tents that were put up

196
00:12:21.320 --> 00:12:24.320
wow to serve as like the jail cells. And it

197
00:12:24.360 --> 00:12:26.679
was like short plus I don't think I wrote it down,

198
00:12:26.720 --> 00:12:28.679
but he got the idea because he went to like

199
00:12:28.720 --> 00:12:34.000
a auction where they were selling military start plus. He was, yeah,

200
00:12:34.240 --> 00:12:36.960
just buying stuff and saw these tents and we're like,

201
00:12:36.960 --> 00:12:39.039
you know what would be good tents? You know what

202
00:12:39.039 --> 00:12:44.240
we could do with this house inmates jail gel And

203
00:12:44.320 --> 00:12:50.960
so eventually four watchtowers, stun fences, and tours were added

204
00:12:51.000 --> 00:12:55.480
features to ten Gel. Yes, tours, tours. People were touring these.

205
00:12:55.840 --> 00:12:58.039
You could call ten City Jail and be like, hey,

206
00:12:58.039 --> 00:13:00.080
I have a group of five and we want to

207
00:13:00.080 --> 00:13:04.559
tour ten City to gawk at the inmates. Isn't that

208
00:13:04.720 --> 00:13:11.919
ridiculous and crazy? Oh my god? Okay about it? Dam

209
00:13:12.799 --> 00:13:17.200
no for real? And uh. Ten City Jail remained open

210
00:13:17.399 --> 00:13:20.679
until a new elected sheriff shut it down in twenty seventeen.

211
00:13:20.879 --> 00:13:23.320
That was finally when he was defeated by the way

212
00:13:23.799 --> 00:13:29.360
twenty seventeen. This bitch was reelected from nineteen ninety two

213
00:13:29.639 --> 00:13:32.960
to twenty seventeen because the racist motherfuckers in Arizona and

214
00:13:33.080 --> 00:13:35.799
Maricopa County love this bitch. They couldn't get a enough

215
00:13:35.799 --> 00:13:41.240
of this racist motherfucker. That's so long. Yeah, yeah, oh

216
00:13:41.320 --> 00:13:44.320
my god, that's like a whole generation of a child

217
00:13:44.440 --> 00:13:48.200
Starned elementary school and going to college. Yeah, that's a

218
00:13:48.240 --> 00:13:53.240
whole an adult was born and became an adults in

219
00:13:53.320 --> 00:13:59.440
those years while I he was elected sheriff. Mind you,

220
00:13:59.600 --> 00:14:03.559
this was the second career because he retired. Wow yep.

221
00:14:03.639 --> 00:14:06.639
And yeah, so that Tensity stayed open until twenty seventeen.

222
00:14:06.679 --> 00:14:09.559
And that's the timeframe around when we saw him on

223
00:14:09.639 --> 00:14:11.480
the news. And that's why I thought this was like

224
00:14:11.519 --> 00:14:13.639
a detention center, like I don't know, I didn't realize

225
00:14:13.679 --> 00:14:15.720
it was like an outdoor gel. I thought we saw

226
00:14:15.799 --> 00:14:18.399
him before. No, no, I'm saying it was during this

227
00:14:18.440 --> 00:14:22.159
timeframe of nineteen eighty two twenty seventeen, right right, right, right,

228
00:14:22.279 --> 00:14:24.679
Oh my god, that's like almost all of our lifetime. No,

229
00:14:26.039 --> 00:14:30.080
I mean your babies. Yeah, he was elected in nineteen

230
00:14:30.120 --> 00:14:33.600
ninety two. We came into adulthood, and in a way,

231
00:14:33.639 --> 00:14:39.399
I was sharing into life in nineteen ninety two. Yeah. Yeah,

232
00:14:39.440 --> 00:14:42.639
So he was a sheriff during our whole lives. And

233
00:14:42.720 --> 00:14:45.600
for some fucking reason, we knew about him in California

234
00:14:45.679 --> 00:14:47.960
when his ass should have never been known outside of

235
00:14:48.000 --> 00:14:53.559
Maripos County Marcopa. But yeah, oh not again. So obviously

236
00:14:53.600 --> 00:14:56.120
people had issues with this Tensity jail. The whole time. No,

237
00:14:56.240 --> 00:15:00.679
of course. In nineteen ninety seven, I'mnesty International condemned the

238
00:15:00.720 --> 00:15:05.639
Tensity GEL and Jose practices for violating human and constitutional rights.

239
00:15:06.600 --> 00:15:10.759
A report from Amnesty International stated that TENSITY was chronically

240
00:15:10.840 --> 00:15:15.240
understaffed and called for the jail to stop operating, and

241
00:15:15.320 --> 00:15:18.639
they were also noted concerns with the use of chain

242
00:15:18.679 --> 00:15:24.120
gangs at the GEL. Chain gangs mm hmm, what is that?

243
00:15:24.919 --> 00:15:26.120
I know you know what it is. I know you've

244
00:15:26.120 --> 00:15:28.440
seen pictures of it. But the reason you might not

245
00:15:28.519 --> 00:15:31.840
know is because these this is an outdated forced labor

246
00:15:32.080 --> 00:15:36.159
like tactic. But for anyone wondering chain gangs or groups

247
00:15:36.159 --> 00:15:39.120
of convicts that were who were used as forced labor

248
00:15:39.200 --> 00:15:42.919
to I don't know, different things like world construction, ditching, farming, whatever,

249
00:15:42.960 --> 00:15:45.919
and they were chained together while they were working, hence

250
00:15:46.000 --> 00:15:48.799
the term changang. I thought it was called something else

251
00:15:48.799 --> 00:15:51.840
for some reason, but I do know about this. Yeah. Yeah,

252
00:15:51.879 --> 00:15:54.120
so that's what a changing is and they were it

253
00:15:54.159 --> 00:15:59.759
was used during slavery. Yeah, and he was doing this. Yeah,

254
00:15:59.799 --> 00:16:03.480
so he was doing this at Tensity, Oh my god. Yeah.

255
00:16:03.559 --> 00:16:05.960
And I actually add chainings. I think it started being

256
00:16:06.080 --> 00:16:08.679
used in the early nineteen hundred, so not during slavery,

257
00:16:09.600 --> 00:16:13.120
but for some reason it was used as a solution

258
00:16:14.039 --> 00:16:17.919
to convict leasing, convict leasing. What I was gonna say,

259
00:16:18.000 --> 00:16:21.720
wasn't this a thing during Jim Crow South? Yeah? I

260
00:16:21.759 --> 00:16:25.960
believe they did use it down there too during that era. Yeah,

261
00:16:27.440 --> 00:16:30.480
and obviously this is cruel, which is why I was

262
00:16:30.480 --> 00:16:33.840
outdated and no longer used, but Joe decided to bring

263
00:16:33.879 --> 00:16:38.000
it back. But yeah, the shackles caused painful ulcers and

264
00:16:38.360 --> 00:16:42.360
dangerous infections. In any misstep from any one would put

265
00:16:42.399 --> 00:16:44.720
the whole group in danger because one person would fall,

266
00:16:44.759 --> 00:16:47.440
it would bring all of them down, just as an example. Right,

267
00:16:47.879 --> 00:16:52.320
insane that he was doing this. Yeah, and then there

268
00:16:52.320 --> 00:16:55.919
were also concerns of excessive force, denial of medical treatment,

269
00:16:56.000 --> 00:16:59.039
and deaths at all of the gels in Maerica, but County,

270
00:16:59.159 --> 00:17:04.440
not just Tense City Joel. And then in nineteen ninety five,

271
00:17:04.519 --> 00:17:07.279
this was when Joe first caught national attention for forcing

272
00:17:07.319 --> 00:17:12.240
inmates to wear pink underpants, which is what we later

273
00:17:12.279 --> 00:17:14.880
saw in the news that he was also doing to

274
00:17:15.000 --> 00:17:19.559
unducting people. He had he would he's attained right, right,

275
00:17:22.480 --> 00:17:25.799
and the people, the people love this, They loved the

276
00:17:25.839 --> 00:17:28.799
abuse that Joe enacted. Well, that's why they kept voting

277
00:17:28.839 --> 00:17:33.480
for him. Yeah, And by nineteen ninety six he was

278
00:17:33.480 --> 00:17:36.960
one of the most popular politicians in Arizona. What is

279
00:17:37.000 --> 00:17:40.519
going on down there? I had Arlano for you, I guess.

280
00:17:42.160 --> 00:17:45.480
And that year he got attention from the from then

281
00:17:45.559 --> 00:17:51.119
Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole, who praised tensity, saying this

282
00:17:51.240 --> 00:17:54.079
idea may spread in other sections of the country. I

283
00:17:54.160 --> 00:17:55.920
talked to one of the inmates who said, I don't

284
00:17:55.920 --> 00:17:59.640
want to come back here. I've learned my lesson and

285
00:17:59.720 --> 00:18:04.319
we know so this form of punishment is not as

286
00:18:04.319 --> 00:18:10.759
a terran like come on. In nineteen ninety seven, the

287
00:18:10.880 --> 00:18:15.720
Justice Department sued Americopa County due to the concerns of

288
00:18:15.759 --> 00:18:18.720
excessive force and mistreatment at the jail, but for some

289
00:18:18.759 --> 00:18:22.799
reason the suit was dropped. But that was only one

290
00:18:22.880 --> 00:18:28.599
legal battle. Oh there's more, Yeah, there's way more. In

291
00:18:28.720 --> 00:18:32.240
nineteen ninety nine, Americapa County settled the wrongful death lawsuit

292
00:18:33.200 --> 00:18:36.039
by paying and the settlement was that they had to

293
00:18:36.119 --> 00:18:39.079
pay eight point twenty five million dollars to the family

294
00:18:39.640 --> 00:18:42.319
of an inmate who died in jail after a struggle

295
00:18:42.319 --> 00:18:45.480
with the guards and of course he didn't really pay it.

296
00:18:45.599 --> 00:18:47.720
This was paid by taxperers, I was gonna say, and

297
00:18:47.759 --> 00:18:50.160
all of this is from the taskpayers instead of their

298
00:18:50.200 --> 00:18:56.519
own like I don't know union. And so he caught

299
00:18:56.519 --> 00:18:59.680
more flack and legal issues when he launched a jail

300
00:18:59.720 --> 00:19:04.279
count website which live streamed inmates and apparently this was

301
00:19:04.319 --> 00:19:07.839
so popular that the live stream receives three million visitors

302
00:19:07.880 --> 00:19:12.640
and crashed on the first day. Who was watching this?

303
00:19:13.440 --> 00:19:18.480
People are depraved psychos. Oh my god. This is why

304
00:19:18.480 --> 00:19:20.680
you can't This is why I can't believe the blue

305
00:19:20.720 --> 00:19:23.200
and on conspiracy theories of Trump not being vootered in

306
00:19:23.279 --> 00:19:26.640
when they were doing shit like this, like please, yeah,

307
00:19:26.880 --> 00:19:33.079
people are insane. Yeah, no, no, three million people. People

308
00:19:33.079 --> 00:19:38.440
are depraved or as Hillary as she capital all capsucks

309
00:19:38.440 --> 00:19:44.920
she says, they're deplorables. I've forgot about that shit. Yeah.

310
00:19:45.279 --> 00:19:54.119
So when people were wearing deplorable shirts fucking losers. Yeah.

311
00:19:54.160 --> 00:19:57.440
After a year of having the gelcam, Joe turned only

312
00:19:57.440 --> 00:19:59.519
one of the cameras off after it showed a women

313
00:19:59.599 --> 00:20:03.559
in maates using the toilet and it had been picked

314
00:20:03.599 --> 00:20:08.319
up by porn websites. Oh my god. Yeah. A few

315
00:20:08.359 --> 00:20:11.039
years later, a court ruled that the cameras violated the

316
00:20:11.119 --> 00:20:14.160
rights of pre trial detainees who had yet to be convicted.

317
00:20:14.759 --> 00:20:16.640
But I guess it was fine for convicted inmates. I

318
00:20:16.680 --> 00:20:26.319
don't know, because that's what they specifically said. Oh my god. Yeah.

319
00:20:26.519 --> 00:20:30.240
By two thousand and five, Joe started eyeing immigration with

320
00:20:30.319 --> 00:20:33.960
his beady little eyes as an issue after the election

321
00:20:34.039 --> 00:20:38.839
of then Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas, who would go

322
00:20:38.920 --> 00:20:41.440
on to be disbarred by the way for what get

323
00:20:41.480 --> 00:20:45.880
into that later. Okay, yes it had to do with Joe.

324
00:20:47.119 --> 00:20:51.119
But anyway, so this, this fight against quote illegal immigration

325
00:20:51.359 --> 00:20:55.799
caught his eye when the attorney Maericopa County Attorney Andrew

326
00:20:55.799 --> 00:21:01.160
Thomas was campaigning on a message of stopping illegal illegal

327
00:21:01.200 --> 00:21:06.920
immigration in quotes right, right, and yeah, you know how

328
00:21:07.000 --> 00:21:08.880
these people can't think for themselves. So that's when he

329
00:21:08.920 --> 00:21:13.400
started viewing illegal quote illegal immigration as a serious He

330
00:21:13.599 --> 00:21:17.519
was like, what's illegal? What? What is that? Oh? It's wrong. Oh,

331
00:21:17.559 --> 00:21:22.000
this guy's telling me that I can't agree with this, right,

332
00:21:23.000 --> 00:21:25.200
So yeah, I started seeing it as a serious legal

333
00:21:25.200 --> 00:21:28.039
issue because of that. So starting that year, Joe started

334
00:21:28.079 --> 00:21:33.720
conducting what's called saturation patrols, but basically checkpoints and immigration sweeps,

335
00:21:34.079 --> 00:21:37.480
which police are not supposed to do exactly. Yeah, and

336
00:21:37.519 --> 00:21:42.160
he was targeting Latino neighborhoods and businesses that employed Latinos

337
00:21:43.480 --> 00:21:46.119
and then like stopping people based on whether they looked

338
00:21:46.359 --> 00:21:50.559
Latin or not racial profiling. Yeah, yeah, okay. So I

339
00:21:50.599 --> 00:21:52.920
saw different years for this, so either in two thousand

340
00:21:52.920 --> 00:21:54.920
and six or tw ten, but I think it was

341
00:21:54.960 --> 00:21:57.759
two thousand and six because it looks like the lawsuit

342
00:21:57.799 --> 00:22:00.480
that was later associated with this was First Island two

343
00:22:00.519 --> 00:22:02.480
thousand and seven and then amended in two thousand and eight.

344
00:22:02.559 --> 00:22:07.559
So into six, Joe created a volunteer posse to help

345
00:22:07.599 --> 00:22:12.480
his deputies and enforced immigration law. This I remember, yeah, yeah.

346
00:22:12.519 --> 00:22:16.720
Do you do you remember any actors who were a

347
00:22:16.759 --> 00:22:17.559
part of this posse?

348
00:22:19.359 --> 00:22:19.599
No?

349
00:22:20.079 --> 00:22:23.200
Oh, you don't, Okay, I didn't remember either, mainly because

350
00:22:23.200 --> 00:22:27.680
I don't know these fucking losers are Some members of

351
00:22:27.680 --> 00:22:38.319
this posse included these fucking dummies Stephen Steven Seagall no Way,

352
00:22:39.400 --> 00:22:41.839
who by that time was a washed up sealless actor

353
00:22:41.920 --> 00:22:45.759
with multiple accusations of sexual harassment and assault. What is

354
00:22:45.799 --> 00:22:49.319
he even known for? A washed up sealless actor who

355
00:22:49.400 --> 00:22:55.640
was only in movies he funds because he's a fucking loser. Yeah. Yeah,

356
00:22:55.680 --> 00:23:03.480
another member, Lou for Reno, no way. Yeah, another washed

357
00:23:03.559 --> 00:23:06.480
up actor, best known for his role as the Incredible Hulk.

358
00:23:07.359 --> 00:23:10.599
And actually I guess he was born as a sheriff

359
00:23:10.640 --> 00:23:13.240
for some reason, in different departments like La San Li's

360
00:23:13.240 --> 00:23:17.759
Obispo counties in California and in Delaware County, Ohio over

361
00:23:17.759 --> 00:23:20.599
the years. I don't know why he I guess because

362
00:23:20.599 --> 00:23:22.480
he's not an actor anymore. So now he's a sheriff

363
00:23:22.519 --> 00:23:24.960
that's his second career. And then some other guy I

364
00:23:25.000 --> 00:23:26.960
didn't really know, but I guess he was an actor.

365
00:23:27.640 --> 00:23:31.720
Uh damn they ever write it down. Oh oh, Peter Lupis.

366
00:23:31.720 --> 00:23:33.839
I don't now, don't know who he is. It's like

367
00:23:33.880 --> 00:23:37.160
an older actor. I forgot to mention. So did you

368
00:23:37.200 --> 00:23:42.799
know that Lufino? During Trump's first presidency, he was appointed

369
00:23:42.839 --> 00:23:47.160
as a member of Trump's Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition. Yeah,

370
00:23:47.279 --> 00:23:49.319
oh my god, I didn't know that. Yeah, that's that

371
00:23:49.400 --> 00:23:55.920
Lupis guy. Okay, I don't know that is a former bodybuilder. Yeah,

372
00:23:56.160 --> 00:23:58.519
and they're all these are all like like bodybuilder types,

373
00:23:58.599 --> 00:24:02.440
So that's saying something I guess. So interesting pattern there.

374
00:24:03.559 --> 00:24:07.680
I mean, we have talked about the fitness into the

375
00:24:07.720 --> 00:24:12.839
al right pipeline before. Mm hmm. I'm very unsurprised to

376
00:24:12.880 --> 00:24:15.880
hear though, Steven Sagall and lou Fino and this fellow.

377
00:24:17.880 --> 00:24:20.920
It's like the that one guy who was Superman and

378
00:24:21.400 --> 00:24:26.319
made all those commercials or whatever her eyes or he

379
00:24:26.519 --> 00:24:31.480
wasn't he was like joint ice, Oh was he Superman?

380
00:24:31.640 --> 00:24:33.680
Was anyone? I know who you're talking about, but I

381
00:24:33.680 --> 00:24:37.119
didn't realize. I didn't know he was Superman. I know

382
00:24:37.160 --> 00:24:41.839
who you're talking about though, Yeah, yeah, hold on, Dean Kin,

383
00:24:44.960 --> 00:24:49.759
yeah him, ridiculous, lose your fucking behavior. Yeah. And other

384
00:24:49.799 --> 00:24:55.000
POSSE members included the Mortcycle Club American Freedom Writers, who

385
00:24:55.599 --> 00:24:58.839
at this point were known for being racist and shouting stars,

386
00:24:59.400 --> 00:25:02.680
basically being Nazis. They just wrote around shouting slurs and

387
00:25:02.720 --> 00:25:06.640
their motorcycles. Yeah, and like a little club of more

388
00:25:06.799 --> 00:25:11.240
cycle writers at their little vests shouts their little matching vests,

389
00:25:11.640 --> 00:25:15.759
probably with the little like uh swatka is on them.

390
00:25:15.920 --> 00:25:19.240
Yeah yeah, I'm probably the US flag right next to

391
00:25:19.440 --> 00:25:23.640
next to the swatka yeah yeah yeah, and maybe a

392
00:25:23.680 --> 00:25:26.680
Confederacy flag as well. And these were the people who

393
00:25:26.759 --> 00:25:33.480
volunteered for this anti immigrant posse. M So this posse

394
00:25:33.599 --> 00:25:38.000
operated until twenty thirteen until the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office

395
00:25:38.000 --> 00:25:42.599
a lost its authority to enforce immigration law after a

396
00:25:42.640 --> 00:25:46.079
court case which became a class action lawsuit Melendis versus

397
00:25:46.079 --> 00:25:49.680
our Pio. And here is some of the things that

398
00:25:49.759 --> 00:25:54.440
the complaint alleged that around two thousand and seven, Americopa

399
00:25:54.519 --> 00:25:57.119
County and Joe R. Pio entered into an agreement with

400
00:25:57.200 --> 00:26:01.400
ICE that basically allowed deputies to perform it enforcement functions

401
00:26:02.000 --> 00:26:06.079
and limited circumstances, which was legal under a section two

402
00:26:06.079 --> 00:26:09.519
eight seven G of the Immigration and Nationality Act. But

403
00:26:09.799 --> 00:26:13.079
the section pretty much says it's not the design to

404
00:26:13.200 --> 00:26:16.799
allow local law enforcement to perform a random street operations

405
00:26:16.880 --> 00:26:19.480
or immigration rates, which is what Joe and his deputies

406
00:26:19.480 --> 00:26:24.160
were doing, right right. And then the section also says

407
00:26:24.680 --> 00:26:29.039
law enforcement officers cannot outright ask about immigration status only

408
00:26:29.160 --> 00:26:31.599
if the person is suspected of a state crime and

409
00:26:31.680 --> 00:26:34.559
more than a traffic offense something else. Joe and his

410
00:26:34.599 --> 00:26:37.359
deputies were not following, so they were following the law.

411
00:26:37.680 --> 00:26:41.200
There is like some circumstances where law enforcement is allowed

412
00:26:41.240 --> 00:26:45.680
to ask legally about immigration that this section two eight

413
00:26:45.720 --> 00:26:50.279
seven g outlines, but they were not following the law. Okay, yeah,

414
00:26:50.599 --> 00:26:56.920
of course, of course. And then the complaint also alleged

415
00:26:56.960 --> 00:27:01.000
that Joe and his deputies were racially profiling, and indeed

416
00:27:01.039 --> 00:27:05.519
they were, of course, of course yeah. Emails later showed

417
00:27:05.640 --> 00:27:09.079
Joe was saying things like quote, if you have dark skin,

418
00:27:09.160 --> 00:27:11.640
then you have dark skin. Unfortunately, that is a look

419
00:27:11.640 --> 00:27:15.119
of the Mexican illegal who were here illegally. They bring

420
00:27:15.160 --> 00:27:19.440
their unclean, disrespectful, integrity less, law breaking selves here. I

421
00:27:19.480 --> 00:27:21.519
am begging you to come over to the twenty ninth

422
00:27:21.519 --> 00:27:24.880
Street Greenaway Parkway area and round them all up. They

423
00:27:24.880 --> 00:27:28.400
crawl around here all day and night end. Quote what

424
00:27:28.440 --> 00:27:34.480
the fuck? Oh my fucking god, what the fun? Joe?

425
00:27:34.480 --> 00:27:37.920
If I ever see you, it's on site, on site.

426
00:27:38.039 --> 00:27:41.799
Take with that, we will. That's not thereat. But if

427
00:27:41.799 --> 00:27:45.079
that's what you picture it, take from that what you will.

428
00:27:45.279 --> 00:27:49.279
It's on site, bitch, Wow, I don't even give a

429
00:27:49.279 --> 00:27:52.079
fuck if his ninety three or whatever it's on site.

430
00:27:52.119 --> 00:27:54.640
I will clock a ninety three year old. I will

431
00:27:55.480 --> 00:28:01.160
if it's Joe R. Pio. Yeah, bitch, it's on site.

432
00:28:02.359 --> 00:28:07.400
And then one more email just just too miss us off. Okay,

433
00:28:08.160 --> 00:28:10.640
there was not an employee in sight or within hearing

434
00:28:10.680 --> 00:28:13.279
who spoke English as the first language to my dismay,

435
00:28:13.359 --> 00:28:19.960
you might want to check this out. Up ridiculous. That

436
00:28:20.079 --> 00:28:21.519
was to one of his deputies, or that was one

437
00:28:21.519 --> 00:28:23.960
of his deputies. He sent it to one of his deputies, like, hey,

438
00:28:24.240 --> 00:28:30.440
check this out. Not speaking English to my just may

439
00:28:30.640 --> 00:28:36.839
fucking loser who fucking cares? You're an arisona bitch and

440
00:28:36.920 --> 00:28:44.440
Mary again and uh, just to give one obvious example

441
00:28:44.480 --> 00:28:48.519
of issial profiling, sheriffs conducted an immigration raid at a

442
00:28:48.599 --> 00:28:52.480
church which they said was a day labor center within

443
00:28:52.680 --> 00:28:55.039
the church and the parking lot of the church. Were

444
00:28:55.039 --> 00:29:00.799
they really just at a church though? Probably yeah? Yeah.

445
00:29:01.039 --> 00:29:04.720
And they arrested and questioned nine Latinos during this raid.

446
00:29:05.400 --> 00:29:08.359
And in one instance, they questioned the driver of a

447
00:29:08.440 --> 00:29:11.480
vehicle who was white, but gave him no citation and

448
00:29:11.480 --> 00:29:15.279
allowed him to leave while they detained his Latino passengers.

449
00:29:15.920 --> 00:29:18.960
Oh my god. And one of the men detained during

450
00:29:19.000 --> 00:29:22.480
this incident, Manuel de Jesus or Dega Melendrez, the namesake

451
00:29:22.480 --> 00:29:26.559
of the class action lawsuit, was in this car. Okay,

452
00:29:26.680 --> 00:29:30.640
I see while being questioned Manuel showed his visa and

453
00:29:30.759 --> 00:29:34.759
worked permit to deputies. Okay, yes, he had like broke

454
00:29:34.799 --> 00:29:40.559
authorization proving that he could be here legally. Okay, right,

455
00:29:40.880 --> 00:29:42.960
and he was ordered to exit the car. He was

456
00:29:43.000 --> 00:29:45.680
pushed against the police vehicle. He was patted down and

457
00:29:45.720 --> 00:29:48.839
his pockets. Manuel had his wallet and a small bottle

458
00:29:48.880 --> 00:29:51.000
of lotion because he didn't like having dry skin. That's

459
00:29:51.039 --> 00:29:54.279
why he had lotion moisturized king. But these ashy asses,

460
00:29:54.279 --> 00:29:57.880
they can't relate now, of course, So after removing the

461
00:29:57.920 --> 00:30:00.279
lotion from his pocket, a deputy asked him in like

462
00:30:00.319 --> 00:30:02.720
a confrontational way. They were like, how many times a

463
00:30:02.759 --> 00:30:07.799
week do you jack off? Because to them, that's the

464
00:30:07.880 --> 00:30:11.440
only purpose of lotion, right, they're like telling on themselves,

465
00:30:11.519 --> 00:30:14.319
discussing people, truly, not that it's discussing to chuck off,

466
00:30:14.359 --> 00:30:16.359
But why would you say that to someone you're but

467
00:30:16.559 --> 00:30:23.960
these people, yeah, these people talking off terror. But yeah,

468
00:30:23.960 --> 00:30:26.680
but to say that to someone you're like, you're the

469
00:30:26.720 --> 00:30:30.880
officer and they're the person you're offensive, I would say

470
00:30:30.920 --> 00:30:36.519
it's sexual harassment, I would agree, coming from them, yeah, yeah.

471
00:30:36.720 --> 00:30:40.480
Manuel was handcuffed roughly, despite him asking them to be

472
00:30:40.519 --> 00:30:43.000
careful because he had a risk injury that had never

473
00:30:43.039 --> 00:30:46.880
healed properly. Of course, they didn't listen to him, and

474
00:30:47.039 --> 00:30:49.839
he was held at the Sheriff's office for about four hours.

475
00:30:50.200 --> 00:30:54.119
For what it s gatewards he's he ended up being

476
00:30:54.160 --> 00:30:57.160
there for longer. We'll get into He was at the

477
00:30:57.160 --> 00:30:59.759
sheriff's officer for hours and he was never offered in

478
00:30:59.799 --> 00:31:03.640
its nation as bench speaking translator, given his Miranda rights,

479
00:31:03.759 --> 00:31:06.319
offered a phone call or anything. Then they drove him

480
00:31:06.319 --> 00:31:08.920
to the local Ice office, where by this point he

481
00:31:09.039 --> 00:31:11.960
was in pain and his hands had become swollen, and

482
00:31:12.000 --> 00:31:14.119
he was placed in an ice holding self for over

483
00:31:14.160 --> 00:31:17.920
an hour, again with no explanations. Finally, an ICE agent

484
00:31:18.000 --> 00:31:21.359
asked to see his documents, which were valid, and he

485
00:31:21.480 --> 00:31:25.160
was let go. Of course, during the whole time in

486
00:31:25.160 --> 00:31:30.079
custody between Sheriff's office and Ice it had been about

487
00:31:30.160 --> 00:31:34.839
nine hours. Oh my god. Manoel was never offered water, food,

488
00:31:35.079 --> 00:31:37.480
told his rights again, or given the names to the

489
00:31:37.480 --> 00:31:43.200
officers who were involved in his arrest, or any paperwork. Nothing. Wow.

490
00:31:44.839 --> 00:31:47.319
Then he had to make his own way back home

491
00:31:47.480 --> 00:31:51.359
from downtown Phoenix to Cave Creek, which was about thirty

492
00:31:51.359 --> 00:31:55.160
two miles apart. Oh my god, and Thank god he

493
00:31:55.240 --> 00:31:58.359
was capable of doing that, because some people like Nuru

494
00:31:58.440 --> 00:32:01.240
La Minsha Malam have lost their lives after being dropped

495
00:32:01.279 --> 00:32:04.759
off by eyes. Yeah, this is dangerous as fuck and

496
00:32:05.240 --> 00:32:07.799
they don't care. Yeah, I'm gonna take a quick detour

497
00:32:07.920 --> 00:32:11.200
to talk about nowdoo because I feel like everyone needs

498
00:32:11.240 --> 00:32:14.839
to know about this. So he was a rhiniage and

499
00:32:14.880 --> 00:32:18.039
hopefully I'm saying that refugee from Burma who and he

500
00:32:18.119 --> 00:32:20.920
fled genocide. That's why he was a refugee. He was

501
00:32:21.000 --> 00:32:25.359
nearly blind, likely as a result of being tortured during

502
00:32:25.400 --> 00:32:29.599
said genocide, and he spoke no English. He was arrested

503
00:32:29.680 --> 00:32:32.880
last year on February fifteenth, twenty twenty five, after being

504
00:32:32.920 --> 00:32:35.920
tasered and beat That morning, he had gone for a

505
00:32:35.960 --> 00:32:39.160
walk and him and his family had actually just arrived

506
00:32:39.200 --> 00:32:42.400
I think, only a few weeks before that, to Buffalo,

507
00:32:42.519 --> 00:32:45.640
New York. So he needed a walking stick but only

508
00:32:45.640 --> 00:32:48.559
had twenty dollars, so he ended up buying a current

509
00:32:48.680 --> 00:32:51.359
rod to use as a walking stick, and then when

510
00:32:51.359 --> 00:32:53.079
the weather got bad, he had it back home, but

511
00:32:53.119 --> 00:32:56.400
he got lost because he was new to Laria. Around

512
00:32:56.400 --> 00:33:00.000
ten thirty am, he ended up in Tracy Chcoone's backyard

513
00:33:00.319 --> 00:33:04.839
in the Riverside neighborhood of Buffalo Patrecy Norul had opened

514
00:33:04.839 --> 00:33:07.200
her back gate, let her dock out and damage her

515
00:33:07.279 --> 00:33:10.799
shared door with his current rod. According to police en

516
00:33:10.839 --> 00:33:13.720
rule was swinging the current rod in a menacing manner,

517
00:33:13.799 --> 00:33:19.359
and the arresting officer, Officer Christopher Mordino, believed Nodule intended

518
00:33:19.400 --> 00:33:22.920
to hurt the police with this current rod. Nodol's lawyer

519
00:33:23.119 --> 00:33:25.440
said he was just scared and startled by the dog

520
00:33:25.759 --> 00:33:28.160
and the commotion. And mind you, in many countries dogs

521
00:33:28.160 --> 00:33:32.200
are used to torture people and they're not used as pets. Yeah,

522
00:33:32.920 --> 00:33:35.440
it's only of freaking people from here that are obsessed

523
00:33:35.440 --> 00:33:38.039
with dogs, me being one of them. Full shade to

524
00:33:38.079 --> 00:33:42.240
them for not understanding that other people and other places

525
00:33:42.240 --> 00:33:44.880
and even here, like in the sixties, they used dogs

526
00:33:44.920 --> 00:33:50.519
to bite black people and suppress their protests. Yeah, right,

527
00:33:50.640 --> 00:33:53.359
So like there's not this dog living culture everywhere and

528
00:33:53.400 --> 00:33:57.359
that's okay and we should be able to say that. No. Yeah,

529
00:33:58.160 --> 00:34:01.160
And I linked an article sources that goes into more

530
00:34:01.160 --> 00:34:03.640
detail about his rest because it's worse than what I said.

531
00:34:03.880 --> 00:34:07.039
But he's charged with assault, trespassing, and possession of a

532
00:34:07.079 --> 00:34:11.360
weapon the curtain rod. Yeah. Once he's placed in the

533
00:34:11.360 --> 00:34:15.679
holding center, Ice placed an immigration detainer on him, and

534
00:34:15.760 --> 00:34:18.519
so Nodoon's family decided to not build him out because

535
00:34:18.559 --> 00:34:20.800
they feared the ICE would take him into custody if

536
00:34:20.800 --> 00:34:24.320
he were released from jail, even on baill sorry the oh,

537
00:34:24.480 --> 00:34:27.480
so in normal jail they placed like the guy Ice

538
00:34:27.599 --> 00:34:30.239
basically basically informing Ice that he was and the family

539
00:34:30.239 --> 00:34:31.920
didn't want to bail him out because if they did,

540
00:34:32.000 --> 00:34:35.440
Ice would come get him. Yeah, okay, Yeah. So months

541
00:34:35.440 --> 00:34:37.760
go by and then the DA agrees to offer a

542
00:34:37.760 --> 00:34:40.119
plea deal to Nordle in which he would not be

543
00:34:40.159 --> 00:34:43.519
convicted with the felony because that would have made him deportable.

544
00:34:43.719 --> 00:34:47.119
So they his lawyers and DA reached a plea deal. Right,

545
00:34:48.039 --> 00:34:51.559
So he pleads guilty to trespassing and a misdemeanor possession

546
00:34:51.599 --> 00:34:54.800
of a weapon the curtain rod, right, the current rod,

547
00:34:55.679 --> 00:35:00.239
and these convictions would not warrant detention or deportation. But

548
00:35:00.360 --> 00:35:04.239
for some reason, on Thursday February nineteenth, this year, twenty

549
00:35:04.239 --> 00:35:07.159
twenty six, he was released to Bord Patrol. And it's

550
00:35:07.159 --> 00:35:10.519
not clear why, because his attorneys they thought Ice was

551
00:35:10.519 --> 00:35:13.440
going to detain him, but ICE was aware that he

552
00:35:13.480 --> 00:35:16.719
was not deportable, and they were basically ready to pick

553
00:35:16.800 --> 00:35:18.920
him up at the ICE station and they were told, oh,

554
00:35:18.920 --> 00:35:21.840
he's not here, so I supposed to go get on,

555
00:35:21.960 --> 00:35:24.440
but Bord Patrol had already gotten him something. I'm not

556
00:35:24.519 --> 00:35:26.920
even it wasn't clear to me how he ended up

557
00:35:26.960 --> 00:35:30.239
in Bor Patrol's hands, but yeah, they're the ones that

558
00:35:30.320 --> 00:35:33.800
got him. And so once Bord Patrol found out he

559
00:35:33.880 --> 00:35:36.679
was not deportable, instead of taking Noodle back to the

560
00:35:36.679 --> 00:35:41.599
holding center or calling his family, literally doing anything, they

561
00:35:41.639 --> 00:35:44.840
dropped him off at a closed Tim Morrins coffee shop

562
00:35:45.559 --> 00:35:49.239
five miles from his home, which was actually his former

563
00:35:49.280 --> 00:35:52.880
address because during the time he was incarcerated, his family moved,

564
00:35:53.480 --> 00:35:55.280
but they were supposed to be informed when he was

565
00:35:55.280 --> 00:36:00.480
released to pick him up, of course, so he was

566
00:36:00.480 --> 00:36:02.360
about five hours away from home. He didn't know how

567
00:36:02.360 --> 00:36:05.039
to get back to his house, which no longer was

568
00:36:05.039 --> 00:36:09.519
his house either way, right, his family and his attorneys

569
00:36:09.519 --> 00:36:12.360
report him missing because they don't know where he's at. Then,

570
00:36:12.519 --> 00:36:16.679
on Tuesday, February twenty fourth, around eight thirty pm, a

571
00:36:16.800 --> 00:36:19.679
passer by called nine one one because she had a

572
00:36:19.679 --> 00:36:23.760
found Nodole's body and he was not responsive. But she

573
00:36:23.800 --> 00:36:26.840
had actually walked by him around five point thirty and

574
00:36:26.880 --> 00:36:29.800
he was on the floor, and she says he was

575
00:36:29.840 --> 00:36:32.079
moving around them, but she happened to pass by again

576
00:36:32.679 --> 00:36:34.639
and then he was no longer moving, so she called.

577
00:36:34.639 --> 00:36:37.639
But she didn't like call, not the first time she

578
00:36:37.679 --> 00:36:42.679
saw him. I think people see men laying on the street,

579
00:36:42.880 --> 00:36:46.199
and you know, you want assumes all they're on drugs

580
00:36:46.320 --> 00:36:49.599
or they're sleeping, you know, so I'm assuming that's what

581
00:36:49.639 --> 00:36:51.519
she did, But then she walked. When she walked by

582
00:36:51.599 --> 00:36:53.679
him again, she noticed his skin was gray and he

583
00:36:53.760 --> 00:36:57.920
was not moving, so she called nine one one, and

584
00:36:57.960 --> 00:37:02.159
the first responders who arrived shortly after are pronounced Nodle

585
00:37:02.199 --> 00:37:05.599
dead at the scene. And point being borbitual has a

586
00:37:05.639 --> 00:37:09.000
habit of doing that. Yeah, they did that to Manuel

587
00:37:09.679 --> 00:37:14.280
decades ago. Yeah, and they just did that recently. So

588
00:37:14.679 --> 00:37:16.519
this is what they do. This is who they are.

589
00:37:16.679 --> 00:37:19.320
You can't terrain them out of it. You can't reform

590
00:37:19.400 --> 00:37:22.079
them because they are the worst, and they have always

591
00:37:22.079 --> 00:37:26.880
been the worst, exactly since their inception. Yes, yeah, and

592
00:37:26.960 --> 00:37:34.519
so back to Joe's BSh, there were more instances of

593
00:37:34.639 --> 00:37:38.079
racial profiling including in the lawsuit. In the lawsuit, including

594
00:37:38.119 --> 00:37:40.880
one family who was pulled over and cited for driving

595
00:37:40.920 --> 00:37:44.559
down a closed the road while white families driving down

596
00:37:44.599 --> 00:37:49.679
the same road were just giving warnings, And this interaction

597
00:37:49.800 --> 00:37:53.639
is described in the complaint. But the woman who was

598
00:37:53.679 --> 00:37:56.000
driving was like, can't you just let us go and

599
00:37:56.000 --> 00:37:58.119
give us a warning, like you're giving everybody else a warning.

600
00:37:58.199 --> 00:38:02.599
They were like no, because they were Latinos. It was

601
00:38:02.599 --> 00:38:06.519
a Latino family. And the sheriffs also conducted raids in

602
00:38:06.599 --> 00:38:10.239
areas where they didn't have jurisdiction, like the city of Phoenix,

603
00:38:10.320 --> 00:38:15.000
where the Phoenix Police Department has jurisdiction. And then a

604
00:38:15.000 --> 00:38:18.360
different lawsuit from two thousand and seven which eventually joined

605
00:38:18.400 --> 00:38:21.559
this class action lawsuit, But this was from a Mexican

606
00:38:21.599 --> 00:38:24.840
citizen who was visiting the US legally and was detained

607
00:38:24.880 --> 00:38:27.840
by the sheriff's department. So I didn't read into that one.

608
00:38:27.840 --> 00:38:31.840
But that was just another example right of racial profiling. Wow.

609
00:38:32.519 --> 00:38:35.119
Also in two thousand and eight, Joe established a hot

610
00:38:35.119 --> 00:38:38.920
line where citizens could leave tips about alleged undocumented immigrants.

611
00:38:38.960 --> 00:38:42.639
These fucking hotlines and what is it with these fucking

612
00:38:42.679 --> 00:38:47.880
fascist people authoritarian days. The same tactics. The hotline a

613
00:38:47.960 --> 00:38:51.880
snitch love hot line. Yeah, yeah, you know what did

614
00:38:51.920 --> 00:38:54.480
you see that clip of that comedian who made a

615
00:38:54.480 --> 00:38:57.559
fake hotline number? Yeah, and a teacher calls them the

616
00:38:57.599 --> 00:39:02.119
hotline and she's like, yeah, this his family deport them basically,

617
00:39:02.159 --> 00:39:04.239
and then the guy's like, okay, so you want me

618
00:39:04.280 --> 00:39:06.880
to deport this five year old child's parents. And then

619
00:39:06.880 --> 00:39:08.519
she's like, you can make it. It's not horrible, and

620
00:39:08.559 --> 00:39:12.760
he's like, I'm just repeating what you're saying. They say

621
00:39:12.800 --> 00:39:15.519
and do horrible shit, and then when you tell them, hey,

622
00:39:15.599 --> 00:39:19.199
that's racist, Oh damn you, they cry their little tears. Well,

623
00:39:19.239 --> 00:39:21.480
what if you stop being racist? Then maybe you wouldn't

624
00:39:21.480 --> 00:39:24.239
be crying about being called racist? Like how horrible do

625
00:39:24.239 --> 00:39:27.000
you have to be to call on your kindergarten student

626
00:39:27.800 --> 00:39:29.599
and be like, oh, they look like they're not from here.

627
00:39:29.880 --> 00:39:32.920
You're yeah, it's like care bitch, damn are you even

628
00:39:32.960 --> 00:39:36.119
a teacher? Yeah? No, they do this. These type of

629
00:39:36.119 --> 00:39:41.159
people become power over people, so they become teachers. And

630
00:39:41.280 --> 00:39:43.920
of course is not to say that teachers and helping

631
00:39:43.960 --> 00:39:47.400
professions are like this, you know, but these teachers people,

632
00:39:48.400 --> 00:39:53.280
they seek out these careers to prey on on vulnerable people. Yeah,

633
00:39:53.719 --> 00:39:57.679
but yeah, they and Gortha, they love their hotlines. Yeah.

634
00:39:57.679 --> 00:40:01.639
And so then this hotline plus the volunteer posse of

635
00:40:02.079 --> 00:40:06.320
citizens enforcing immigration law. Right, obviously, this resulted in more

636
00:40:06.400 --> 00:40:10.360
racial profiling. In October twenty thirteen, as a result of

637
00:40:10.360 --> 00:40:14.760
the class action lawsuit, Judge Snow issued an order mandating

638
00:40:14.840 --> 00:40:18.000
Joe and his agency to make changes to prevent continued

639
00:40:18.039 --> 00:40:22.840
misconduct and prevent future violations of the community community's constitutional rights.

640
00:40:23.119 --> 00:40:25.079
And there was like a whole list of stuff they

641
00:40:25.079 --> 00:40:27.280
needed to change, stuff they needed to enact that was

642
00:40:27.280 --> 00:40:29.320
a part of this ruling. One of those things was

643
00:40:29.360 --> 00:40:33.159
appointing a monitor to keep tabs on the sheriff's department,

644
00:40:33.320 --> 00:40:35.960
to have audio and video recording of all traffic stops,

645
00:40:36.480 --> 00:40:40.760
increase training, implement comprehensive record keeping. Because also they were

646
00:40:40.800 --> 00:40:43.480
like pulling people over and then not giving them like

647
00:40:43.960 --> 00:40:46.840
a citation or like a key number, like to have

648
00:40:46.920 --> 00:40:50.280
it on paper. Yeah, harassing, they were harassing people like

649
00:40:50.320 --> 00:40:52.719
without a pay per troil. And so these were like

650
00:40:52.760 --> 00:40:54.800
some of the things to try to like stop that

651
00:40:54.960 --> 00:40:59.280
right that he was ordered to do. Right, he was

652
00:40:59.400 --> 00:41:03.760
doing this right, They weren't suggesting core orders. Yeah, and

653
00:41:03.800 --> 00:41:07.239
then also stemming from this lawsuit in May twenty sixteen,

654
00:41:08.639 --> 00:41:14.679
because Joe wasn't following and the core orders that he

655
00:41:14.719 --> 00:41:16.400
was supposed to be following that he was ordered to

656
00:41:16.440 --> 00:41:18.679
follow the changes he was supposed to be making. That like,

657
00:41:18.920 --> 00:41:21.800
he was supposed to stop racial profiling, right right, right,

658
00:41:22.199 --> 00:41:25.320
and didn't. So then in May twenty sixteen, a federal

659
00:41:25.320 --> 00:41:27.639
court found Joe and his top deputies to be in

660
00:41:27.679 --> 00:41:33.119
contempt for repeatedly violating core orders to stop ritually profiling.

661
00:41:33.119 --> 00:41:35.800
On the notes, he just couldn't he couldn't stop doing. Yeah,

662
00:41:35.840 --> 00:41:39.880
he just needed to. It was like a compulition for him. Yeah. Yeah.

663
00:41:40.079 --> 00:41:43.280
And as part of his ruling, Judge Now wrote the following,

664
00:41:43.519 --> 00:41:46.719
The court finds that the defendants have engaged in multiple

665
00:41:46.760 --> 00:41:51.320
acts of misconduct, dis honesty, and bad faith with respect

666
00:41:51.320 --> 00:41:53.920
to the plaintiff class and the protection of its right.

667
00:41:54.559 --> 00:41:57.639
They have demonstrated a persistent disregard for the orders of

668
00:41:57.679 --> 00:42:00.159
the court, as well as an intention to violate and

669
00:42:00.280 --> 00:42:05.199
manipulate the laws and policies regulating their conduct, a partly

670
00:42:05.280 --> 00:42:10.559
from this class action lawsuit in twenty ten. Oh yeah,

671
00:42:10.840 --> 00:42:15.639
there's more. In twenty ten, the US Department of Justice

672
00:42:15.800 --> 00:42:20.559
sued the Americopa County Sheriff's Department due to discrimination against Latinos,

673
00:42:21.079 --> 00:42:25.360
who they found were being frequently stopped, detained, and arrested

674
00:42:25.400 --> 00:42:29.840
on the basis of race, color, or national origin. And

675
00:42:30.159 --> 00:42:34.320
also because of discriminatory job practices against Latino Latino inmates

676
00:42:34.400 --> 00:42:38.920
who had limited English skills, and because of illegal retaliation

677
00:42:39.079 --> 00:42:42.920
against precede critics. So this was These were all the

678
00:42:42.960 --> 00:42:46.119
reasons that the Department of Justice sued the Americopa County

679
00:42:46.159 --> 00:42:48.079
in twenty ten, and that was apart from the class

680
00:42:48.079 --> 00:42:53.719
action lawsuit for similar reasons of racial profiling. Right, and so,

681
00:42:54.599 --> 00:43:00.679
speaking of the legal retaliation against their preced critics, Joe

682
00:43:01.000 --> 00:43:05.719
had reporters Mike Lacey and Jim Larkin arrested after they

683
00:43:05.719 --> 00:43:09.719
published an article about a grant a separate grand jury investigation,

684
00:43:10.079 --> 00:43:18.760
Oh my god, what the fuck involving Joe's office, And

685
00:43:18.840 --> 00:43:22.840
all charges against Mike and Jim were eventually dropped because

686
00:43:22.840 --> 00:43:25.719
they were bogus, but they sued the county and settled

687
00:43:25.719 --> 00:43:28.679
for three point sinty five million, again out of the

688
00:43:28.840 --> 00:43:34.840
taxpayer wallet. But on the bright side, Mike and Jim

689
00:43:34.960 --> 00:43:37.320
used that money to establish a journalism school at the

690
00:43:37.360 --> 00:43:42.199
Arizona State University, and also the Lazy and Larkin fronta

691
00:43:42.280 --> 00:43:44.719
fund which advocates for a migrant rights and freedom of

692
00:43:44.719 --> 00:43:47.920
speech issues. So that's free kids, that's beautiful. Yeah. So

693
00:43:47.960 --> 00:43:52.360
then when he went back into the community. Yeah, but yeah,

694
00:43:52.360 --> 00:43:54.840
they were not the only ones targeted by Joe, and

695
00:43:55.119 --> 00:43:58.840
Joe was eventually sued for targeting others, and so was

696
00:43:58.880 --> 00:44:02.599
the Maricopa County attorney Andrew Thomas, who was helping Joe

697
00:44:02.760 --> 00:44:08.400
target these people. And Andrew was eventually disbarred for these actions. Okay,

698
00:44:08.559 --> 00:44:10.599
this is why he was just barred. Yeah, and Joe

699
00:44:10.679 --> 00:44:14.159
even opened a criminal investigation on Judge Snow, the judge

700
00:44:14.199 --> 00:44:18.760
that was presiding over the class action lawsuit. Wow. Yeah, yeah,

701
00:44:19.079 --> 00:44:23.599
and he had a private investigator tail Judge Snow's wife.

702
00:44:24.199 --> 00:44:29.159
That sounds illegal, it was, and why the Department of

703
00:44:29.239 --> 00:44:33.280
Justice was suit him for these things, right right, right right?

704
00:44:34.000 --> 00:44:39.480
At least eleven people filed lawsuits against Joe and Andrew eleven. Yeah,

705
00:44:39.519 --> 00:44:43.159
And as of June twenty fourteen, figures showed that Joe

706
00:44:43.159 --> 00:44:48.000
and Andrew cost Maricopa County taxpayers over forty four million

707
00:44:48.119 --> 00:44:52.760
dollars forty four million dollars, but they kept voting for

708
00:44:52.840 --> 00:44:59.400
him idiots, I'm sorry to say. Yeah. And there's more issues,

709
00:44:59.440 --> 00:45:03.880
including election law violations, misspending county funds. For example, Joe

710
00:45:03.920 --> 00:45:05.880
used funding that was supposed to go into the human

711
00:45:05.920 --> 00:45:12.559
smuggling unit for investigating political rivals. Hello, Hello, this is

712
00:45:12.639 --> 00:45:16.039
Christina from the Future. A quick correction here. He did

713
00:45:16.079 --> 00:45:19.880
not misuse funds from the human smuggling unit. He misused

714
00:45:19.920 --> 00:45:23.400
funds for that unit. He was using money from a

715
00:45:23.480 --> 00:45:26.880
restricted detention fund. And what this means is that this

716
00:45:26.920 --> 00:45:30.199
is money that could only legally be used for jail

717
00:45:30.320 --> 00:45:34.840
items like food equipment, and instead he uses for that

718
00:45:35.000 --> 00:45:38.800
human smuggling unit and to pay for investigations of his

719
00:45:38.920 --> 00:45:42.880
political rivals. So very much illegally using these funds. Okay,

720
00:45:42.920 --> 00:45:47.119
back to the episode. And that's the thing they're always

721
00:45:47.159 --> 00:45:49.559
crying about illegal immigration. They're out here doing the most

722
00:45:49.559 --> 00:45:55.159
illegal shit. This bitch was a fucking criminal and so yeah,

723
00:45:55.199 --> 00:45:58.679
he was misusing funds, right, So not only for investigating

724
00:45:58.679 --> 00:46:01.400
political rivals, but he also use that money to go

725
00:46:01.440 --> 00:46:03.880
on out of state fishing trips like to Alaska and

726
00:46:04.079 --> 00:46:09.880
to go to Disneyland Alaska and Disneyland Okay. Yeah, then

727
00:46:09.920 --> 00:46:12.320
the DOJ suit him again for the same things in

728
00:46:12.320 --> 00:46:20.920
twenty twelve. I'm like again again. And then during these lawsuits,

729
00:46:20.960 --> 00:46:23.440
the Department of Justice had to sue Joe to get

730
00:46:23.519 --> 00:46:26.000
him to cooperate with their investigation. And that was the

731
00:46:26.039 --> 00:46:28.320
first time that the Justice Department had to sue an

732
00:46:28.320 --> 00:46:32.159
agency for refusing to comply. Oh my god. See, if

733
00:46:32.960 --> 00:46:35.159
if this money was coming straight out of their pockets

734
00:46:35.199 --> 00:46:38.480
and if he was actually able to face jail time,

735
00:46:38.480 --> 00:46:40.719
they wouldn't be doing this. If they could just grab him,

736
00:46:40.800 --> 00:46:44.000
throw him in his own tensity, shackle him, and then

737
00:46:44.079 --> 00:46:47.480
take the sheriff county money, you wouldn't be doing any

738
00:46:47.519 --> 00:46:49.480
of this. But because it comes out of the taxpayer,

739
00:46:49.639 --> 00:46:52.920
because he can just evade all this like he just

740
00:46:53.000 --> 00:46:57.719
kept doing it. Yeah. An expert in the DOJ lawsuit

741
00:46:57.960 --> 00:47:02.679
said that Joe and his sheriffs engaged and oversaw the

742
00:47:02.679 --> 00:47:07.880
worst pattern of racial profiling in US history, in US history,

743
00:47:09.400 --> 00:47:13.000
second to only two Ice right now. Yeah, probably if

744
00:47:13.039 --> 00:47:16.360
they like redid the study, they would find that Ice

745
00:47:16.559 --> 00:47:20.199
is doing the mostarcial profiling. But yeah, Joe was doing

746
00:47:20.199 --> 00:47:22.280
this shit. That bitch wasn't even working for ICE or

747
00:47:22.280 --> 00:47:27.800
Port it's a sheriff. Oh my fucking god. And yeah,

748
00:47:27.840 --> 00:47:32.480
the study commissioned by the Justice Department found that Latino

749
00:47:32.599 --> 00:47:35.679
drivers were four to nine times more likely to be

750
00:47:35.760 --> 00:47:40.440
stopped then similarly situationd non Latino drivers. So like an

751
00:47:40.480 --> 00:47:43.679
example that I gave earlier was that family was pulled

752
00:47:43.679 --> 00:47:46.599
over for driving down that road and the white families

753
00:47:46.599 --> 00:47:50.079
were like, oh right. Yeah. The study also found that

754
00:47:50.199 --> 00:47:55.119
Joe's anti immigration squads responded repeatedly with enforcement patrols to

755
00:47:55.239 --> 00:48:00.239
complaints about people with dark skin or Spanish speakers. How

756
00:48:00.280 --> 00:48:02.079
is that even a situation where you have to respond?

757
00:48:02.159 --> 00:48:05.199
These are people just existing in their skin and in

758
00:48:05.320 --> 00:48:09.880
ninety one they're speaking Spanish. Storic person speaking Spanish, Like

759
00:48:09.920 --> 00:48:13.199
what the fuck? And then the study also found that

760
00:48:13.280 --> 00:48:18.239
prison guards pressured Latino inmates to sign voluntary deportation forms

761
00:48:18.800 --> 00:48:21.679
of course, and yeah, so this was one thing that

762
00:48:21.960 --> 00:48:25.320
they had stopped doing once they lost the legal ability

763
00:48:25.400 --> 00:48:27.880
from that one section to eight seven G. And yeah,

764
00:48:27.920 --> 00:48:30.199
there were other issues that they also described, like in

765
00:48:30.280 --> 00:48:32.920
one instance, Joe was asking his deputies to go check

766
00:48:32.960 --> 00:48:37.039
out a McDonald's where workers were speaking Spanish. And then

767
00:48:37.159 --> 00:48:40.039
there was another time where Joe thanked a racist letter

768
00:48:40.079 --> 00:48:43.079
writer for sharing his concerns about illegal immigration. And I

769
00:48:43.079 --> 00:48:45.400
wish I had looked for a copy of this letter,

770
00:48:45.400 --> 00:48:47.119
but I didn't. I didn't look into it. You know what,

771
00:48:47.199 --> 00:48:49.480
I didn't even want to hear him. I know you're right,

772
00:48:49.480 --> 00:48:53.199
we have shared probably just vile, just vile shit. And

773
00:48:53.199 --> 00:48:54.880
he's like, thank you, thank you for saying all that.

774
00:49:00.199 --> 00:49:02.719
And now back to the twenty sixteen ruling in that

775
00:49:02.719 --> 00:49:06.400
class action lawsuit. So the court found Joe to be

776
00:49:06.440 --> 00:49:11.079
in contempt repeatedly because he continued to racially profound Latinos.

777
00:49:11.239 --> 00:49:14.880
And it got to the point that federal prosecutors charged

778
00:49:14.960 --> 00:49:19.079
Joe with criminal contempt of court. And he finally finally

779
00:49:19.159 --> 00:49:22.360
lost his re election after serving six terms that year,

780
00:49:22.440 --> 00:49:28.960
twenty sixteen, six terms. These people re elected him six

781
00:49:29.039 --> 00:49:33.159
after all the investigations, after all the fraud, all the

782
00:49:33.199 --> 00:49:36.119
money he was misusing, after all of that. I know

783
00:49:36.159 --> 00:49:38.519
they don't care about how people in jail are being treated.

784
00:49:38.599 --> 00:49:41.760
I know they don't care about Latinos and indocumented people.

785
00:49:41.880 --> 00:49:44.599
But they still did not care that their money that

786
00:49:44.639 --> 00:49:47.440
they had to pay over forty four million dollars because

787
00:49:47.440 --> 00:49:49.360
of this man, and that was just on the account

788
00:49:49.800 --> 00:49:53.199
of the eleven lawsuits, there was still other lawsuits like

789
00:49:53.199 --> 00:49:59.480
the wrongful death that's key, mistreating in jails. Yeah, so

790
00:49:59.519 --> 00:50:03.079
I don't know the total is. We'll never know. I mean,

791
00:50:03.119 --> 00:50:04.559
I'm sure that I could look it up, but I

792
00:50:04.599 --> 00:50:06.840
didn't like total all the different losses to get out

793
00:50:06.960 --> 00:50:10.880
of course. Of course, in twenty seventeen, Joe was found

794
00:50:10.960 --> 00:50:14.639
guilty for criminal contempt of court and was facing up

795
00:50:14.679 --> 00:50:16.480
to six months in jail. I didn't see if he

796
00:50:16.519 --> 00:50:18.920
ended up serving that time or not, but he was

797
00:50:18.960 --> 00:50:23.239
sound guilty for criminal contempt of course. Okay, there's, like

798
00:50:23.280 --> 00:50:27.199
I said, other lawsuits, too many lawsuits instead of on his

799
00:50:27.320 --> 00:50:30.480
name to get into. But in two thousand and four

800
00:50:30.559 --> 00:50:34.679
he was sued for wrongful arrest and entrapment. And it's

801
00:50:34.719 --> 00:50:39.159
so hard to prove entrapment. Mind you, what is entrapment?

802
00:50:39.719 --> 00:50:41.599
You know what triment is. It's like basically when the

803
00:50:41.599 --> 00:50:43.960
police set you up. Now I meant for the arrest

804
00:50:45.000 --> 00:50:48.599
for the listeners, it's when the police set you up

805
00:50:48.599 --> 00:50:50.800
basically to commit a crime and then they arrest you.

806
00:50:50.840 --> 00:50:55.360
That's illegal, of course. Yeah yeah. And of course, like

807
00:50:55.400 --> 00:50:57.800
I said, that's without mentioning all the lawsuits over jail

808
00:50:57.840 --> 00:51:02.360
conditions under Joe right right, Oh my god, just to

809
00:51:02.400 --> 00:51:04.719
mention one of these lawsuits because there was many of them,

810
00:51:04.800 --> 00:51:10.079
Graves v or Pyo. In this lawsuit, federal Judge Neil

811
00:51:10.119 --> 00:51:13.360
Wake found that the county jails violated the constitutional rights

812
00:51:13.360 --> 00:51:16.719
of inmates in medical and other care related issues. And

813
00:51:16.760 --> 00:51:20.039
some of the allegations included inmates being fed moldy bread,

814
00:51:20.199 --> 00:51:23.719
broughten fruit, and other contaminated food, held in cells that

815
00:51:23.760 --> 00:51:26.639
were too hot to the point they endangered the inmates'

816
00:51:26.679 --> 00:51:30.119
health and denied them serious medical Oh. I already said

817
00:51:30.119 --> 00:51:32.320
that medical metal needs, among other issues. And yeah, and

818
00:51:32.360 --> 00:51:34.519
this was also one of the biggest issues intense city

819
00:51:35.079 --> 00:51:38.599
because they were outdoors in Arizona has one hundred plus

820
00:51:38.800 --> 00:51:41.880
degree days during the summer times and these people were

821
00:51:41.880 --> 00:51:45.119
held outdoors intent straight up in the sun, with no

822
00:51:45.320 --> 00:51:50.320
ac nothing man. Yeah. And if that's not enough, Joe

823
00:51:50.400 --> 00:51:52.760
was involved in the so called birther movement. Do you

824
00:51:52.760 --> 00:51:56.320
remember that? Very vaguely. Yeah, this was a bunch of

825
00:51:56.320 --> 00:51:59.079
fucking racists. We're saying Obama for the birth certificate and

826
00:51:59.079 --> 00:52:00.639
he wasn't born in the UIA as one of the

827
00:52:00.760 --> 00:52:04.719
ring leaders was Trump, of course. Yeah, and basically they

828
00:52:04.760 --> 00:52:07.880
were saying that because that would make him eligible, eligible

829
00:52:07.960 --> 00:52:09.960
to be president. And of course it was a lie,

830
00:52:10.199 --> 00:52:13.119
was made up. They just made this shit up. And yeah,

831
00:52:13.159 --> 00:52:16.199
Joe kept pushing this birther conspiracy into twenty sixteen, when

832
00:52:16.199 --> 00:52:19.840
Obama wasn't even fucking president anymore, of course, of course,

833
00:52:21.039 --> 00:52:23.360
And he even held a news conference in twenty sixteen,

834
00:52:23.400 --> 00:52:26.320
which why was showing up to this who I don't know,

835
00:52:26.559 --> 00:52:31.760
like why other fucking dumbasses. Yeah, and at this conference

836
00:52:31.800 --> 00:52:35.199
he was showing nine ways in which the birth certificate,

837
00:52:35.199 --> 00:52:38.920
Obama's birth certificate was forged, which I'm like, you're just

838
00:52:39.159 --> 00:52:41.119
You're just sitting there pointing at things. It's like, sir,

839
00:52:41.480 --> 00:52:45.559
you cost you cost your county forty four million dollars,

840
00:52:45.519 --> 00:52:48.880
forty four million dollars. Like stop stop, what a reading?

841
00:52:48.960 --> 00:52:52.039
We just go home, go home, stay there and don't

842
00:52:52.079 --> 00:52:58.159
show you and ever again. But yeah, And although Joe

843
00:52:58.440 --> 00:53:01.159
was convicted of criminal contempt of court. I don't know

844
00:53:01.199 --> 00:53:05.559
if you know this, I did so. Although he was

845
00:53:05.559 --> 00:53:09.800
convicted of criminal contempt of court, Joe was eventually pardoned

846
00:53:10.440 --> 00:53:18.280
by none other than Trump. Are you fucking to right now? Oh? Yeah?

847
00:53:19.119 --> 00:53:23.159
Of course, of course that's all. I'm nothing. I was

848
00:53:23.199 --> 00:53:26.920
shock for like a second, but no upon thinking, upon

849
00:53:27.000 --> 00:53:28.719
thinking about it for a little bit. No, of course,

850
00:53:29.360 --> 00:53:33.039
of course that's who pardoned him. Why wouldn't he. Trump

851
00:53:33.039 --> 00:53:37.119
announced this decision on none other than Twitter, declaring Joe

852
00:53:37.159 --> 00:53:41.039
to be an American patriot who was just keeping Arizona safe.

853
00:53:41.920 --> 00:53:50.039
He costs was the biggest racial profiler legally, yeah, over

854
00:53:50.159 --> 00:53:55.599
eleven lawsuits. Yeah. Many people took issue with this, including

855
00:53:55.599 --> 00:54:00.800
the ACLU and the NAACP, who issued state saying the

856
00:54:00.840 --> 00:54:04.960
pardon was a presidential endorsement of racism and calling Joe

857
00:54:05.079 --> 00:54:07.559
a remorseless criminal who took the launch of his own

858
00:54:07.639 --> 00:54:10.679
hands and enacted racist policing policies, which just all that

859
00:54:10.760 --> 00:54:17.360
is true legally speaking. Yeah. Several experts on authoritarianism described

860
00:54:17.360 --> 00:54:20.559
the pardon as illiberal and that it undermined the law,

861
00:54:21.039 --> 00:54:24.719
which yeah, it did, I mean yeah. After the pardon,

862
00:54:24.880 --> 00:54:28.559
Joe filed a motion to vacate his conviction for criminal contempt,

863
00:54:28.679 --> 00:54:33.000
but it was denied by Judge Susan Bolton, and she

864
00:54:33.119 --> 00:54:36.159
was saying, she said that while the pardon spared Joe

865
00:54:36.199 --> 00:54:40.360
from any punishment, it didn't revise the historical facts of

866
00:54:40.360 --> 00:54:42.599
this case, so that's why she denied it, Like, no,

867
00:54:42.679 --> 00:54:47.199
you did all this yeah yeah. And finally, in twenty twenty,

868
00:54:47.239 --> 00:54:50.639
the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals rejected Joe's attempt to

869
00:54:50.800 --> 00:54:56.639
vacate his guilty verdict. Good and as of this episode

870
00:54:57.360 --> 00:55:02.960
February twenty twenty six, that bitch, Wait, it's March, and

871
00:55:03.000 --> 00:55:07.400
I was like, yeah, February. As of March twenty twenty six,

872
00:55:08.239 --> 00:55:11.159
that bitch, Joe is still kicking. I can't believe he's

873
00:55:11.159 --> 00:55:13.840
still Yeah, like you said, the most evil people of

874
00:55:13.960 --> 00:55:19.960
the longest Yeah, yeah, that was an episode on Joe Opio.

875
00:55:20.320 --> 00:55:23.840
Thank you for that. I love getting mad, like I

876
00:55:23.920 --> 00:55:26.559
love hearing you, just like adding to a list of

877
00:55:26.559 --> 00:55:28.639
people that I should hate and why you should hate them.

878
00:55:28.679 --> 00:55:30.880
I already hated him, and you already hated him, but

879
00:55:31.239 --> 00:55:34.960
there was so much I didn't know about this, Yeah, bitch,

880
00:55:35.159 --> 00:55:40.800
like yeah, yeah, I hated him before, but I hate

881
00:55:40.880 --> 00:55:43.679
him even more now. And I'm honestly I can't wait

882
00:55:43.920 --> 00:55:47.760
until he dies. Sorry to say, I'm not sorry to say, actually, yeah,

883
00:55:47.840 --> 00:55:51.440
I will be celebrating, so I hope he croaks over soon.

884
00:55:52.119 --> 00:55:55.519
I mean, he's the numbers are not on his side,

885
00:55:55.599 --> 00:55:58.960
you know, like time of nineties three, he's kind of overdue.

886
00:55:59.159 --> 00:56:04.440
Really yeah, he has long lived his uh time, he

887
00:56:04.519 --> 00:56:07.880
needs to go. Yeah yeah, well let us know who

888
00:56:07.920 --> 00:56:10.360
else we should add to our Behind the Bastard of

889
00:56:10.360 --> 00:56:13.239
those episodes and these are just like it's like Behind

890
00:56:13.280 --> 00:56:18.159
the Bastards but has to do with something Latine Yeah. Yeah.

891
00:56:18.199 --> 00:56:20.599
And and Joe he's the biggest op. That's what he

892
00:56:20.639 --> 00:56:24.599
has to do. He terrorize the community. Uh. And again

893
00:56:24.800 --> 00:56:27.079
Carmen's biggest app in mine too, but not as much

894
00:56:27.119 --> 00:56:30.480
as Carmen. Yeah. Yeah, he's been my He's been my

895
00:56:30.519 --> 00:56:32.920
biggest op since I learned of this man. I think

896
00:56:32.960 --> 00:56:36.480
I was in high school. Yeahs was on talking about

897
00:56:36.559 --> 00:56:40.039
him before he left the Nubi sound because they were

898
00:56:40.079 --> 00:56:47.079
super protent trumph yeah R network R. Yeah. Okay, Well

899
00:56:47.280 --> 00:56:50.119
